There is a particular kind of confession I hear from friends. It usually comes out sheepishly, like admitting to eating cereal for dinner: “I know there’s so much good stuff out there, but I’m watching that sitcom again.” Sometimes it’s the fifth time through. Sometimes it’s the twelfth.
I want to make a case that there’s nothing to confess.
The pressure to keep up
Streaming has turned culture into a conveyor belt. There is always a new series everyone is talking about, a new season dropping on Friday, a recommendation from a friend with the gentle threat of “you haven’t seen it yet?” attached. Keeping up starts to feel less like a pleasure and more like homework.
Against that backdrop, choosing something you have already seen can look like a lack of curiosity. I’d argue it’s often the opposite: a person who knows what they need on a given evening and isn’t embarrassed to pick it.
What a rewatch gives you
A new show asks things of you. You have to learn the characters, track the plot and decide whether you even like it. That can be thrilling. It can also be exactly what you don’t have the energy for after a long day.
A familiar show asks for nothing. You know the jokes are coming, so you get to enjoy the timing. You notice the background gag you missed the first three times. You can fold laundry, half-listen and still feel the warmth of characters who feel a little like old friends. There’s a reason people call these “comfort shows.”
And rewatching is a kind of attention in its own right. Reading a favorite book again is treated as a sign of good taste. Listening to an album a hundred times is just being a fan. Somehow TV is the only medium where returning to something you love gets framed as being stuck.
Balance, not guilt
I’m not suggesting anyone wall themselves off from new things. Some of my favorite comfort shows were once the scary, unfamiliar new series I almost didn’t start. The point is that both kinds of watching have a place.
So the next time someone asks what you’re watching and the honest answer is the same thing you watched last fall, just say it. No apology needed. You’re not falling behind. You’re resting.
