If your Mac is always nagging you about low storage, there’s a new, free way to claw some back: remove Apple Intelligence entirely.
An open-source command-line tool called RemoveMacAI, posted on GitHub by a developer who goes by omlahore, disables Apple’s AI features on macOS 27 and deletes the AI models they rely on. According to the project and MacRumors, that frees up about 12GB, and some users report recovering noticeably more.
What it turns off
The tool switches off a long list of Apple Intelligence features, including:
- Siri’s AI features and the ChatGPT integration
- Writing Tools, Genmoji and Image Playground
- AI summaries in Mail, Messages, Safari and Notes, plus smart replies and inline predictions
- Photos Clean Up and Spatial Photos
- Predictive code completion in Xcode
Regular dictation keeps working, MacRumors notes. There’s also an option to keep specific features you still want.
How it works
Simply turning Apple Intelligence off in System Settings may not reclaim the space, some users report. RemoveMacAI uses a configuration profile to disable the Apple service that manages those downloads, removes the models, then points future download attempts to a closed local port so they don’t come back.
It doesn’t require turning off System Integrity Protection, a key macOS security feature. And it’s reversible: a single “revert” command restores the original settings and re-enables the features.
It only works on Apple silicon Macs running macOS 27, and it’s released under the permissive MIT license. You can install it with Homebrew or a one-line script from the project’s GitHub page.
Should you use it?
It depends on how much you use Apple’s AI tools, and how tight your storage is. A few things to weigh first:
- It’s unofficial. Apple didn’t make it, and MacRumors explicitly says it isn’t endorsing the tool and that anyone using it does so at their own risk.
- It could break with an update. MacRumors reports the tool relies on deprecated configuration settings from macOS 26.4 that still work in macOS 27.0.1, but Apple could change that at any time.
- Back up first. Make a Time Machine backup before running any tool that changes system settings.
- Work Mac? Ask IT. Company-managed Macs often use their own configuration profiles, and adding another may cause conflicts.
- Read before you paste. Piping a script from the internet straight into Terminal gives it a lot of trust. Look at what it does first.
If you just want fewer AI features, you can still switch them off individually in System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri. That won’t necessarily free space, but it’s Apple’s supported route.
