ChatGPT Will Start Rewriting Advertisers’ Ads Automatically on Oct. 30. Here’s How to Opt Out

Starting October 30, OpenAI will automatically let ChatGPT rewrite the ads that businesses run inside the chatbot. If you advertise on the platform, you have a little over a week to say no.

What Is Changing

According to Search Engine Roundtable, which cited OpenAI’s email to advertisers, the company will switch on “creative enhancements” for all new and existing self-serve ChatGPT ad campaigns on October 30. The system can rewrite headlines and descriptions, translate ad text into other languages, resize images and send clicks to a different page on the advertiser’s website that it judges more relevant.

The key line from the email: “When enabled, these ads can run automatically without requiring you to review or approve each version.” Variations may be prepared in advance or generated in real time as a conversation unfolds.

How to Opt Out

  • Open your ad account settings in OpenAI’s Ads Manager before October 30. The report points to ads.openai.com/settings.
  • Turn off creative enhancements at the account level, or adjust them campaign by campaign. Campaign-specific settings override the account default.
  • If you already opted out earlier, OpenAI says those choices will be kept.

Why Advertisers Are Uneasy

Letting software rewrite your pitch is not new to online advertising. The difference here is the setting: ChatGPT ads appear inside private-feeling conversations, and a rewritten claim can reach people without a human checking it. For regulated businesses such as lenders, health providers or anyone making price or guarantee claims, an auto-generated headline that overstates something can become a legal problem for the advertiser, not the platform.

Search Engine Roundtable also noted early grumbling in the PPC community: at least one advertiser had paused its ChatGPT Ads test over poor lead quality, and another criticized the feature as a way to serve ads for content advertisers never approved.

What This Means If You Just Use ChatGPT

Per OpenAI’s help page, ads show only to people on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts are ad-free, and free users can opt into an ad-free version with lower usage limits. Ads appear below a response, are labeled, and are supposed to stay away from conversations about health, mental health and politics. Accounts identified as under 18 do not see ads, and Temporary Chats show none.

OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers. You can limit tracking in Settings under Ad Controls: turn off ad personalization, stop past chats and memory from informing ads, view your ad history, and delete ads data, which may take up to 30 days to fully clear.

The Bigger Picture

The timing is notable. Netflix cut its 2026 advertising target from $3 billion to $2.7 billion this week, blaming a slower-than-expected rollout of ad product features, even as ad revenue is still expected to grow more than 80% this year. Selling ads is hard, and the pressure to make them easier to buy and cheaper to produce is real. Automated rewrites lower the effort for small advertisers, who often have no copywriter or time to build a dozen versions of one ad, and they let OpenAI tailor wording to what someone is actually asking about. Whether they raise or lower quality is what early data will have to show.

There is also a practical question of control. If a rewrite points a click to a different page than the one you chose, your analytics, tracking links and offers may no longer line up. Advertisers who run promotions with an expiration date should be especially careful to check where those clicks land.

What to Do

  • Advertisers: decide on purpose. If you keep enhancements on, check your live ads weekly and keep a record of what ran.
  • Anyone testing ChatGPT ads: compare lead quality with and without the feature before spending more.
  • Everyone else: a quick visit to Ad Controls takes a minute and is worth it if you use a free account.

We could not verify OpenAI’s email directly, so the details of the change come from Search Engine Roundtable’s report, plus OpenAI’s public help pages. Terms may change before the 30th.
