Tesla plans to stop making the Cybertruck next year, according to CEO Elon Musk, who said on X that the factory space will go to building more two-seat Cybercab robotaxis.
The news was reported by TechCrunch on Nov. 6. The article does not cite a Tesla filing, and it does not give an exact end date for production.
A Big Gap Between Promise and Sales
When Musk handed over the first trucks in late 2023, he predicted about 250,000 sales a year. TechCrunch says Tesla has sold just tens of thousands in total over the last three years.
The truck also changed after its 2019 reveal. Tesla said then it would start under $40,000 with up to 500 miles of range. By the late-2023 deliveries the base price was around $60,000, and top range had dropped by more than 100 miles.
The Pivot to Robotaxis
The Cybercab has been on the streets of Austin for about two months, and Tesla says there have been no major incidents so far. The company plans to expand to other cities, starting with Dallas later this month. Tesla also runs Model Y robotaxis in Austin, Houston, Dallas and three Florida cities.
It is the third Tesla product to be discontinued. Earlier this year the company ended the Model S and Model X and moved that factory space toward its Optimus humanoid robots.
What It Signals
For shoppers, the practical takeaway is that the Cybertruck never became the mass-market pickup it was pitched as. Its price rose, its range fell and its sales stayed far below the forecast. Tesla is now putting its factory floor behind robotaxis and robots instead. Whether those bets pay off is still an open question, and the company has not published figures that would settle it.
What Owners Should Know
Nothing in the report says what happens to current Cybertruck owners. Ending production usually does not end service or parts support, but Tesla has not said anything specific, so owners should watch for an official statement from the company.
