How to Find and Cancel Subscriptions on iPhone and Android

Subscriptions are designed to be easy to start and easy to forget. A free trial rolls into a monthly charge, an app you used once keeps billing you, and a few dollars here and there add up fast.

If you subscribed through your phone’s app store, you can see and cancel those charges in one place. Here’s where to look.

On iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings and tap your name.
  2. Tap Subscriptions.
  3. Tap the subscription you want to stop.
  4. Tap Cancel Subscription. You may need to scroll down to find it.

Apple notes that if there’s no Cancel button, or you see an expiration message in red, the subscription is already canceled.

On a Mac

  1. Open the App Store.
  2. Click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, then click your name again on the page that opens.
  3. Click Subscriptions, choose the one you want and click Cancel Subscription.

On a Windows PC, you can manage Apple subscriptions on the web at account.apple.com.

On Android

  1. Open the Google Play app.
  2. Tap your profile icon at the top right.
  3. Tap Payments & subscriptions, then open your subscriptions.
  4. Pick the subscription and tap Cancel subscription, then follow the prompts.

Two things worth knowing from Google’s help pages. First, uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription. Second, some apps let you pause payments instead of canceling, for anywhere from a week to three months, which is handy for a service you only use seasonally.

What happens after you cancel

In most cases you keep access until the end of the period you’ve already paid for, and you simply won’t be charged again. If you’re on a free trial, Apple recommends canceling at least 24 hours before it ends to avoid being billed.

Can’t find a charge?

If a charge on your card statement doesn’t show up in either list, you probably subscribed directly with the company, on its website or through another account. A few ways to track it down:

  • Search your email for “receipt from Apple” or “invoice from Apple” to see which Apple Account was used.
  • Look for a receipt from the company itself and cancel through its website or account settings.
  • If a family member’s name appears on an Apple subscription, they’ll need to cancel it from their own account.
  • Still stuck? Contact the company that bills you.

Make it a habit

Set a reminder to check these two lists every few months, and add a calendar alert the day you start any free trial. It takes two minutes and can save real money.
