After years of rumors, Apple has a foldable phone. The company unveiled the iPhone Duo at its September 9 event, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, new Apple Watch models and AirPods.
The Duo is a book-style foldable: closed, it works like a regular phone; open, it becomes a small tablet.
The key specs
- Two screens: a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display with a matte nano-texture finish. Apple says both screens share the same aspect ratio, so apps scale between them.
- Chip: the A20 Pro, built on a 2-nanometer process and shared with the iPhone 18 Pro.
- Build: titanium frame, IP68 dust and water resistance (rated to about 20 feet, or 6 meters, for 30 minutes).
- Size: 0.2 inches (5.2 mm) thick when open, 0.44 inches (11.3 mm) closed, and about 9 ounces (254 g), according to Macworld.
- Battery: two cells, one in each half. Apple quotes up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer screen and up to 31 hours on the inner one.
- Colors: Star White and Night Sky.
Price and dates
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 with 256GB of storage. Macworld lists $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB and $3,199 for 2TB. Preorders open October 16, and the phone goes on sale October 23 in more than 70 countries.
Apple is also selling a $129 folio with a built-in kickstand and a $79 case.
The rest of the lineup
According to Macworld, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and the Pro Max at $1,299. MacRumors reports preorders for both open September 12, with availability on September 18. iOS 27 arrives as a free update on September 14.
Should you wait?
At nearly $2,000, the Duo is a premium experiment. This is Apple’s first foldable, and real-world questions — how the hinge and inner screen hold up after months of use, and whether battery life matches the claims — can only be answered once independent reviewers get their hands on it next month. If you need a phone now, the iPhone 18 Pro is the safer bet; if you’re curious about folding, there’s no harm in waiting for reviews.
